Chana Masala – Spicy Chickpeas
Chana Masala is a spicy Indian dish with a hint of citrus.
I don’t actually know very much about cooking Indian cuisine. I have, however, had Chana Masala before and I loved it. I had it last while I was on vacation last month and I made a mental note to myself to recreate it at home. So here is my TiaTofu version.
This is an easy recipe to make at home and it’s nice and healthy, too. You can adjust the heat by using less jalapeño or omitting completely if you prefer. My almost 3-year-old daughter loved it and didn’t think it was too spicy, although she does tolerate spicy foods pretty well.
- 2 cans chicpeas, drained
- 2 tomatoes, diced
- 1 onion, diced
- juice from 1/2 of a lemon
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 jalapeño, finely diced
- 1 tbsp cumin
- 1 tsp ground ginger
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp cloves
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp turmeric
- Heat frying pan to medium heat. Cook the onion and garlic for about 2 minutes.
- Add all remaining ingredients and cook over medium heat for 12-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Serve as is as a side dish or over rice for an entree.
